Some Jewish but mostly Christian writers have from the beginning identified the Dead Sea Sect as Essenes. The more intense the impression, the more lasting will it be in the subconscious. One scroll, the famous Cave 11 Temple Scroll, was kept under his floorboards in his Bethlehem home. At Qumran, however, all members of the community were baptized with water for ritual purification. Only four tiny fragments of 4Q253 are extant. While this translation of tlie non-biblical Scrolls does not claim to cover every fragmerrt retrieved from the caves, it is complete in one sense: it offers in a readable form all the texts sufficiently well preserved to be understandable in English. Hiqqar and Qittar and Ephronim and Shakkoth. .. But what does one do with the ceramic evidence from the main occupation of Qumran?
